Bush to Sudan: It's "genocide"

George Bush has finally labeled the humanitarian crisis in Sudan a genocide. Here is the story. In addition, the US is pressing harder for oil sanctions on Sudan, and may be working up to a large African Union role in ending the crisis.

If the UN agrees that the events in Sudan constitute a genocide, then the body is required to intervene. Bush's actions have greatly increased the chance that the UN will act in an effective way.

Meanwhile, Europe is worried about how much harm sanctions may cause to Sudan. But, Europe is always worried about casting opinion on a foreign nation (other than the US, that is). The US does have the ability to push Europe quite a bit, and the possibility of African Union troops resolving the crisis can bolster the US's case for interfering in Sudan.
