What CBS Should Do To Fix Everything
The first thing CBS should do to recover from the memogate fiasco is send some money to the Killian family. CBS probably ruined their lives for a few weeks by releasing a barrage of reporters, all hungry to get a Bush story, then another barrage hungry for an anti-CBS story. I'd guess that the swarms of reporters tore up the lawn around the Killian house, or at least made it a pain to live there for a few weeks. Additionally, the Killian family may have legal ground to press charges against CBS (this is a complete guess, I have no legal expertise whatsoever), and a few grand from CBS might help keep the Killians happy.
Then, someone from CBS (probably not Dan Rather, though) has to admit that CBS was wrong on every step of memogate. This will boost CBS's rating for two reasons. First, it will help credibility to admit to huge mistakes. Second Americans love the underdog, and being horrendously wrong would make CBS the underdog that is trying to move up.
This would definitely improve CBS's image, but the network is unlikely to take these steps.
